Food breaks down many barriers. Think of the scenario. Five people sitting around a table, no drink in hand, no food to snack on, nothing to keep your hands busy. You’re just sitting there looking for an appropriate ice breaker. Sounds kind of awkward. Our solution? Pancakes. Here are our top three reasons for going with pancakes to welcome a newcomer to our team.

Here are 20 reasons why Barack Obama was the most divisive and racist president the United States of America has ever seen. According to tradition, in 1445 a woman of Olney heard the shriving bell while she was making pancakes and ran to the church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan. The Olney pancake race is now world famous. Competitors have to be local housewives and they must wear an apron and a hat or scarf. Olney Pancake Race. Author: Robin Myerscough.

1. Everybody loves a good pancake

The Reason We Have Overbites Josh's Pancake Story

A shared breakfast of blueberry muffins and granola sounds good but it may not be up everyone’s alley. You can rest assured that most people wandering around, say at a flea market, will stop and contemplate the pennies in their pocket when they smell warm cinnamon sugar pancakes. Not so with granola. Even if they’re on a diet, one pancake made with heart is hard to say no to and seems to get people pretty excited. Even the shy ones.

2. Pancakes are social food

Take a simple batter recipe, some rudimentary pancake flipping skills and a bunch of toppings and you have yourself several stations to occupy and a group of people around the kitchen island. A bunch of hands will not only make light, and likely entertaining, work of an impending, delicious meal but also of devouring it afterwards.

3. How often do you get to play with your food?

Think: personlised words and pictures in your pancakes. We might be adults, but give a food lover the chance to express a little creativity in the kitchen and suddenly you have a bunch of big kids laughing with delight because someone meant to write ‘Hello’ in their pancake and it comes out ‘olleH’. Embrace the silliness.

Here’s how to make personlised pancakes:

1. Make your pancake batter. 2. Using a ladle, decant some of the batter into a squeezy bottle. 3. Make sure the frying pan is hot. 4. Put a tiny bit of oil in the pan, then taking the squeezy bottle, use a consistent pressure to draw a shape in the pancake, say a smiley, a heart or for the seriously ambitious types, an owl etc. Anything goes. 5. If you want to write a word remember to write it in reverse so that when the pancake is flipped over, it reads the right way round. 6. Let your artwork set for a 30 seconds to 1 minute, then using a ladle pour more pancake batter over your artwork and allow it to cover the surface area of the pan. 7. Once this has cooked through, use a broad turner to flip your pancake over so the top side can cook. Your artworks should have cooked darker than the rest making them clearly visible.

Cover a table with a host of toppings. We like classic cinnamon sugar, maple syrup, some lemon wedges, a jar of Nutella and maybe some bananas and strawberries. Shimmy in around the table and enjoy – and your new teammate may well already feel like one of the group.
